Sustainable ProcurementBeyond the slogans.

The EU regulatory stack, frameworks that work, category wins, and honest reads of the reports everyone cites.

Sustainable procurement spent ten years as a marketing slide. It's not anymore. Between CSRD (now in force for large companies), CSDDD (in force, with France's controversial delay), ESPR (introducing the Digital Product Passport), the EU Right to Repair, and the Sustainability Claims Directive, procurement is now the function that holds the regulatory line on what your company can credibly say, source, and ship in Europe.

That's the working assumption of this series.

The Sustainable Procurement series at theprocurementor.com is the working procurement leader's reference for what's changed, what's coming, and what to do about it. It's the largest series on the site for a reason: this is where regulation, supplier strategy, and category management collide hardest right now, and most teams don't have the capacity to build the whole reading list themselves. So we built it.

This isn't an ESG ideology series. The take is unambiguous: sustainability is now a business risk, a compliance obligation, and an opportunity for genuine procurement value — but only when it's operationalised at the category level, not bolted onto a CSR report. The articles that make this concrete come from real cases: the circular economy infrastructure project where reuse savings beat procurement savings 3-to-1, the maintenance tender that combined a merger with a measurable environmental impact reduction, the energy contracts at Amazon where the first PPAs in Europe were a procurement-led move, not a sustainability-led one.

Four sub-series, organised by the angle a working procurement leader actually searches with:

EU Regulations. The reference reading. CSRD overview, sustainability reporting and the end of greenwashing, CSDDD due diligence obligations, ESPR and the Digital Product Passport, the EU Taxonomy as a financing lever, the Right to Repair, France's CSRD/CSDDD delay analysis, the Sustainability Claims Directive, and the EU's broader sustainability commitments. Nine articles, all maintained against the live regulatory text.

Frameworks. The conceptual scaffolding. UN SDGs translated for business use, Triple Bottom Line + Cradle to Cradle as a coherent operating model, Net Zero vs Carbon Neutrality (they are not the same), and the untapped opportunity in Circular Economy procurement.

Operational. What you actually do on a Tuesday. Sustainable sourcing methodology, sustainable procurement savings, packaging as a strategic lever, and the foundational piece on how procurement quietly impacts the world more than most internal functions.

Analysis & Reports. The annual scan. UN SDG Report analyses, WWF environmental reports, Circular Economy industry reports, EU regulation impact assessments specific to procurement, and the case-study pieces (iPhone USB-C, planting trees as a real climate measure) that turn macro arguments into operational lessons.

If you're a procurement leader being asked "what's our position on CSRD" or "are we ready for CSDDD" — start with the EU Regulations sub-series. If you're trying to design a sustainable category strategy, start with Frameworks then Operational. If you want to know where the risk and opportunity are heading, read the Analysis sub-series in chronological order.

This work matters now in a way it didn't five years ago. The articles in this series are written to be useful — referenced, shared with executive teams, used as briefing material — not just read.
